Waitaha Regional Kapahaka Competitions

Kia piki te ora had the privilege to present at the Waitaha Regional Kapahaka Competitions on Saturday May 21st. To be apart of such an event will be unforgettable for us as He Waka Tapu along with other maori organisations put to together a team to assist the rohe to put 4 teams through in qualifying for Te Matatini 2017 in Ngati Kahungunu which has never been done before.

This festival comes to life every two years, so what a pleasure to have a spot and spread some light to the community on our dark spots such as “Suicide”.

We presented after all the groups had performed for the day, but this topic wasnt the elephant in the room as many groups that performed dedicated items and their programs to this beautiful topic.

Such a humbling experience to share our whakaaro and feelings to this festival on “Suicide” with people from as far Invercargill, queenstown, Nelson and all around the world as the festival was live streamed also.

Nga mihi to Waitaha Culture Council in reaching 50 years and to the 4 teams who qualified for Te Matatini 2017.
